4001. Orme, J. A. March 2. Wheels, locking while standing. -Figs. 1 and 2 show stops fitted to the platform of a vehicle hoist or lift. They may also be applied to the platforms of vehicles. Fig. 7 shows a stop. A hinged plate B<2>, with a hinged nose-plate, is connected by a link F to a weighted crank E on a rocking shaft G, upon which it is free to rotate through an angle sufficient to allow the plate B<2> to be pressed down flat without rotating the shaft G. A crank M on the shaft is connected to the operating-rod M'. The link F may be a spring one. As shown in Fig. 1, four shafts G, each with a stop at each end, are connected together in pairs, a pair at each end of the platform. The plates B' of each pair slope in opposite directions, so that a vehicle may be drawn on to the platform in either direction, until the front wheels are stopped either by the stop B' or B' according to the direction. In the case shown, the vehicle has been drawn on from the left. The stop B' thus stops its further movement, while the stop B prevents its return. At the landing place, the rod M' is operated, either by hand or automatically, to lower the stops B', B<3> and allow the vehicle to be drawn off. Each stop allows the wheels to pass over it in one direction but not in the other.
