Description

G. H. PLEASANGB Elevator.`
No. 224,723. I'Jatemecl` Feb. Y1?, 1880.
mimi@ ATTORNEY wlTNEssES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. PLEASANOE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
E LEVATO R.
` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,723, dated February 17,1880,
` Application tiled December 31, 1879.
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Plains- ANGE, of Cleveland, in the county ot' Cuyahoga and State ot' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
. clear, and exact description of the invention,
is shown, in side elevation, a frame supporting both an elei-'ator-belt'and a steam-engine cylinder, with suitable connections, whereby the steam-engine can operate the elevator. There is also shown in this tigure of drawing a portable steam-boiler and a flexible steampipe connection between said boiler and the engine upon the elevator-frame. My device is here represented as -in operation lifting barrels from a wagon to the second story ota house.
A is a frame, made ot any suitable shape, dimensions, or material. As to whether said frame shall be all ot' a single section, or whether it shall consist of two or more sections, someway connected or united, l care not; neither do I care whether it be constructed for operating one kind of an elevator-belt, ,or another, as said elevator-belt and apparatus must be of a character and construction suitable to the use to which the device is designed Vto be put.
O is a steam-engine cylinder, of anysort or construction, and with it are associated the valves and necessary apparatus to constitute a complete steam-engine.
D D are rollers or pulleys, over which the endless elevator-belt B is stretched. lo one orboth these pulleys or rollers D is connected suitable gear or belt connection with the steamengine O, so that said engine shall operate to revolve said pulley and thus move 'the elevator-belt B.
E is a iexible steam-pipe, and F is a portable steam-boiler. ,n
It will be readily seen that my device is not only completely portable, but applicable to a Wide range of uses, for the elevator-frame can be interposed between any load or collection of matter and the place where said matter is to be deposited, and steam-connection made by the flexible pipe E with the engine U; and now, when the steam-engine is set in motion, the elevating mechanism is ready to perform its function.
For loading and unloading cars and. vessels, for lifting barrels, boxes, and merchandise, or for transferring it from one place to another, either on a level or up or down, my device is especially applicable. Its frame can be constructed to be used in any place where it is wanted, and power can conveniently be applied through the flexible steamv pipe, which, ofcourse, can be of any required length.
I am aware that a metallic cable or band has been attached to the piston ot' a steamengine, whereby a reciprocating motion equal to the stroke of the piston is imparted to the band or cable and the latter employed for hoisting or lifting articles, and hence I would have it understood that I make no claim to such construction and combination of parts, as my improvement relates to portable elevators having continuously-moving endless belts, the latter being actuated by a steamengine permanently secured to the frame of th e. elevator.
What I claim is- The combination, with a portable elevator having an endless belt mounted on suitable rollers journaled in said frame, of a steam-engine permanently secured to the elevatorframe, and intervening gearing connecting the steam-engine with one ofthe rollers of the elevator, whereby a continuous movement may be imparted to the endless belt by the power of steam, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE y H. PLEASANGE.
Witnesses JNO. GRowELL, Jr., WILLAED FRAGKER.
