Abstract
3758. Thornycroft, J. E., and Thornycroft Steam Waggon Co. Feb. 27. Motor road vehicles. -Relates to driving- wheels separately mounted to rotate on the axle, and driven through springs as described in Specification No. 6828, A.D. 1899. According to this invention, a sleeve S at each side, free to rotate on the axle A, supports at its central part one of the bearings R, on which rests the corresponding vehicle bearing-spring F, This sleeve carries at its outer end a block B to which the springs L are attached, and at its inner end a gear-wheel G. To enable the two wheels D to be locked together when desired, friction clutches are provided for making the wheels fast to the axle. The clutch may be a cone clutch, or an internal or external band clutch. The external band clutch is shown in Fig. 1. On the wheel D is secured a drum U embraced by a band T, the ends of which are attached to an arm M rigidly fixed to the axle. The band may be tightened when desired by a screw and nut.
