Cylinders.-The cylinders of engines generally but more particularly those of gas and oil engines used on motor cars, are cooled by air directed through helical passages b and among helical ribs e, surrounding the cylinder c or its water jacket by means of funnels a, d, shown in plan in Fig. 1. The funnels d convey the air to the ribs at the rear of the cylinder.
