Abstract

148. Imray, O., [Hulbert, M. A.]. Jan. 2. Furs.-Relates to machines for removing the water-hairs from pelts. The pelts are secured to an endless apron 10 passing over the rollers 6, 9, 7, 8, and the stretcher-bar 11. The apron is tensioned by springs 12 acting on pivoted arms 2 which carry the roller 7. The other rollers and the stretcher-bar are carried by oscillating levers 1 to which are secured the arms 3, 4, 5. The levers 1 are oscillated by means of a cam on the shaft 43, on which rests a lever pivoted at 91 and connected by a suitable link with the arm 3. The stretcherbar is thus caused to reciprocate between the shearing position shown in full lines in Fig. 4 and the position shown in dotted lines, where the pelt is in contact with the rotary brush 26. To the arms 4 which carry the stretcher-bar are secured brackets 16 supporting a fur-retaining device consisting of a brush 18 and comb 24. The feed of the apron is effected by means of a ratchet-wheel . 77 bearing a pinion which gears with a toothed wheel on the shaft of the roller 6. During the descent of the levers 1, the ratchet-wheel comes in contact with a pair of pawls 72, 76 pivoted t) the machine frame. As the stretcher-bar returns to the shearing point the strip of pelt which has been brushed by the brush 26 is drawn through the prongs of a comb 45 adjustably mounted on camactuated slides 46. The stiff water-hairs are not held down by the comb 45, and are sheared between the fixed knife 37 and the reciprocating knife 36. The knife 37 is fixed to a bar 88 carried by sliding blocks 86, so that it can be withdrawn from its working position by means of links 87. arms 90, and rock-shafts 91 actuated by a locking hand-lever. The knife 36 is mounted on a bar 103 carried by blocks 104 actuated by cams 101. A compressible packing 106 is interposed between the knife 36 and bar 103, thus rendering possible a minute adjustment of the edge of the knife relatively to the other. The edge of the knife 36 forms an obtuse angle with the vertex in the centre. A similarly-shaped bar 114 is mounted above the knife, and is provided with a number of set-screws 115, which bear on the knife near its edge and serve to accurately adjust it throughout its length. In a modified form of machine, the apron is not fed by pressure between the rubbercovered rollers 6, 8, but a fifth roller is introduced, round the greater part of the circumference of which the apron passes, and which serves to feed it. One of the rollers is tensioned by a cord and weight instead of by the spring 12.
