Abstract

23,830. Pohl, E. Nov. 29. Carbon. - Carbons for electrical and electro-chemical and other purposes are prepared by treating carbon bodies, whilst embedded in a mass of reduced carbon, with a carbon-yielding gas under the action of heat, the gas being conducted from the outside into, or produced within, the enclosing mass of reduced carbon. When a smooth surface is required on the finished carbon, the carbon body to be treated is tightly covered with a thin layer of readily-cokeable substance. As an example of the process, a rod or plate made in the usual way by mixing powdered coke, charcoal, &c. with tar, oil, or the like, moulding, drying, and finally burning is closely wrapped in a sheet of paper, and placed centrally in an iron or other fireproof receptacle, the surrounding space being packed with reduced charcoal, coke, &c. The receptacle is next rapidly heated to a white heat, and a current of hot carbonic oxide, hydrocarbon gas, cyanogen, or cyanogen compounds admitted. The receptacle and contents are afterwards allowed to cool, the receptacle opened, and the carbon taken out and removed from its coke-like envelope.
