Abstract

Balancing moving parts; cylinders, arrangement or disposition of; compound and multiple. expansion engines; engines with two pistons reciprocating oppositely within same cylinder.-Relates to steam, gas, and like engines, and comprises several arrangements of simple and compound engines designed with a view to attaining partial or entire balance. Several forms of engines with two or three cylinders working on oppositely-disposed cranks are described. Fig. 3 shows one of these. The cylinders are so disposed that their axes come as closely together as possible. The upper cylinder 1 is a high-pressure cylinder, and the two lower ones 2, 3 single-acting lowpressure cylinders, the steam expanding on the down-stroke in their upper ends. Distribution to the three cylinders is effected by a suitable single valve. A two-cylinder compound engine, a doubleacting three-cylinder engine, and a triple-expansion engine are also shown. Fig. 4 shows a threecrank compound engine with two pistons reciprocating in opposite directions in a single cylinder. Steam first acts in the upper end of the cylinder at a, and then expands in the space between the two pistons P, P<1>. Fig. 9 shows an engine with two cylinders disposed on opposite sides of a two-throw crank shaft. The pistons in this are weighted at p, p<1> so as to bring the centre of gravity of the two reciprocating masses as nearly as possible into the median line of the engine. In connection with engines of the above kinds, two-throw crank shafts with the central web bent are shown, which enable the cylinders to be placed very closely together. Fig. 2 shows a crank shaft in which the same result is obtained by making the central web in the form of a solid disc g with countersunk borings a on opposite sides.
