Abstract
22,294. McClintock, F. April 22, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Type, setting; linotype machines.-Relates to key mechanism for controlling the ejection of types or matrices from their channels 1. The ejector rods 3, which push the lowest types through openings 2 to the mechanism for conveying them to the point of assemblage, are fixed to pistons 4 movable in cylinders 5, and are fitted with springs 6 which return them from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1. The pistons are driven by compressed air or gas which is admitted to the cylinders from a reservoir 7 through passages 9<a> and 13 when the valves 10 are depressed by the corresponding key levers 16<a>. The valves 10 are perforated at 14 to allow the air to escape from the cylinders when the valves are returned to their seats by the springs 11. These springs are adjustable by screws 12 for regulating the pressure or " touch " required for operating the keys. Leather washers or caps 9<b> make tight joints for the valves and reduce noise in their operation. When an ejector rod is not thrown out far enough to eject a type, or when the last type has been ejected and the block 19 rests on the bottom of a channel, the corresponding key is prevented from rising by the following means :-A. rod 17 actuated by a spring presses upon the valve 10, and entering into the passage 14 prevents the valve from returning. In normal working the end of the rod 17 is engaged by the piston 4, Fig. 2, and the rod is thereby prevented from entering the passage 14. A modified construction of valves is also described in the Specification.
