Abstract

21,714. Simons, C. E. G. Oct. 31. Explosive gases, detecting.-A catalytic substance heated to a suitable temperature is brought into contact with air containing explosive gas or dust, and the rise of temperature or its effect is observed or used to give an alarm. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a coil of platinum wire A enclosed in a gauze-ended receptacle is balanced against a resistance or lamp E on a Wheatstone bridge which has been calibrated for different percentages. In a modification, the decrease of current caused by the heating of this circuit liberates the armature of an electromagnet, which thereupon completes an alarm circuit. In another form, the rise of temperature causes a mercury thermometer to complete an alarm circuit. Observations on filtered air show the presence of dust by difference. The apparatus may be portable or otherwise arranged.
