The bunching up of the carriages due to the slowing down of the locomotive causes the brakes to be automatically supplied. The upper ends of the rods e may be connected by a cord to enable the brakes to be applied by hand power from one end of the train, and each rod is provided with a spring k for taking off its brake immediately the carriages open out again.
