Impact pulverizers applicable for reducing combustible material, such as coal or coke, and for forcing the pulverized material with the proper propoition of air for perfect combustion into the firebox of a boiler, and also applicable for reducing cement &c. Series of beaters 17, secured to the shaft 9, rotate in chambers 3, 4, 5 of graduallyincreasing diameter. The material is fed into the chamber 3, and escapes into the fan chamber 12, the outlet 13 of which is connected to the furnace. In order to ensure the delivery of the fuel into the furnace in a thin flat stream, the delivery pipe is made somewhat of hour-glass section. The feeding-device is shown in Fig. 6. It is surmounted by a hopper 31, Fig. 1. The shaft 48 carries a disc 59, upon which the material passing down the cylinder 30 collects, and from which it is swept by a stationary shear blade ; a hand-lever serves to adjust the rate of feed by raising or lowering the shaft so as to vary the distance between the end of the cylinder 30 and the disc. The air required for pulverizing is drawn in with the feed at 33 ; its supply is regulated, simultaneously with the adjustment of the feed, by a gate which is coupled to the lever. The extra amount of air required for complete combustion in the case of fuel is supplied from a chamber 21, Fig. 1, having a branch 22 provided with a valve 24 which may be connected to the above-mentioned gate.
