Abstract

16,357. MacGregor, A. B. Aug. 11. Sleep-inducing, special means for.-Sleep is induced by auto-hypnosis, the patient lying on the right side and gazing at an illuminated device, consisting of a suggestive word or phrase, such as "Sleep," the illumination of which proceeds, at about the level of the eye, from left to right, thus causing a tendency to gaze upwards. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, a spindle c, carrying an attachment with the word " Sleep " in letters of reflecting-material, preferably mirror glass, is revolved in a direction contrary to that of the hands of a clock by clockwork &c. b, the letters being illuminated by a lamp &c. placed behind the patient. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, transparencies are fixed in the opaque face a' of a case a, and these are illuminated gradually and intermittently from left to right by means of a lamp c and an oscillating or revolving shutter d, or a mirror, prism, &c.
