Abstract

14,818. Bousfield, J. E., [Ross, H. S.]. July 18. Corrosion, preventing. - Relates to galvanic methods of preventing corrosion in boilers, pipes, and other vessels. According to the method shown in Fig. 1, zinc plates Z, Z are placed in a vessel A external to the boiler B, from which it may be isolated by a valve V. The plates are connected by wires W with various points on the internal surfaces to be protected. Each point of contact with the wire is the centre of an area of protection. The connections between the plates Z, Z and the rod on which they are mounted, and to which the wires are attached, are protected by grommets, cement, or otherwise from the action of the water. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement suitable for pipes. Zinc rods Z are mounted in projecting tubes A, being attached to a screw cap G. The joints are protected by a rubber or cement washer J. Figs. 3 and 6 show similar zinc rods Z attached to plugs or studs G secured in the walls of the boiler or other vessel to be protected. The form of the plug or stud may be variously modified. Zinc plates may be attached to the plates of a boiler, their joining edges being rabbeted, grooved, or chamfered to receive lead, cement, rubber, or other protecting- material to preserve the joint from corrosion.
