Abstract
9188. Walters, J. W. May 2. Disc-wheels; wheels with motors; hubs ; tyres, non-elastic.- Relates to a motor wheel for vehicles and to means !for starting, steering, stopping and reversing it. Two sectional elevations taken at rightangles are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The wheel rim D<3>, connected to the hubs D<1>, D<2> by curved webs D', D<5>, has an inwardly-projecting flange D<6> which carries two bevel gear-wheels G, G'. The motor E, rigidly fixed to non- rotating sleeves C, C<1> within the wheel, revolves the main shaft E<6>, which is supported from the same sleeves. Mounted on the shaft E<6> is' a wheel F which gears with a pinion F<1> secured on a short shaft F<2> journalled in an. arm F<3> which turns loosely on the shaft E<6>. A bevel-gear wheel F<4>, capable of gearing with either of the two bevel-wheels G, G', is secured to the shaft F<2>, and the arm F<3> is operated by means of the segmental wheels F<5>, F<6>, shaft H, arm H<1>, cords H<2>, arm H<5>, vertical spindle H<7>, and arms H<8>, H<9>, so that the wheel F' either gears with one of the wheels G, G<1> or is free from both. The motor, which is preferably gas or gasoline, has a feed-pipe E' from the reservoir E<3> fixed to the fork B<4>, and an exhaust pipe E<1> into the atmosphere. A conical plug valve is placed in the feed-pipe, and is operated by means of the levers and links I, I<1>, I<2>, I<3>, I<4> and a projection controlled by the operator's foot. The forks B' are carried by an undercarriage B', which rotates on ball bearings B<1> under the framing B, and which has a vertical hub whereby the wheel can be steered by means of the handle B'. When the wheel is applied to a bicycle, a brake may be operated from the handle H<8>, and when applied to a plough the wheel tyre is spiked. Each of the two front wheels of a vehicle may be motor wheels, in which case they are steered by connecting them by a link and operating the link as above described. The gear wheels F' are also operated simultaneously from a slider.
