Abstract

9114. Vidal, A. E. May 1. Tanning.-Relates to frames for clamping hides or skins together in pairs, or for clamping the edges of a folded hide, so as to form a receptacle for tanning-liquor, which is thus caused to expedite the tanning process by percolating through the skin. Fig. 1 shows an interior elevation of one of the frames employed for clamping a folded hide, Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a plan showing the folded hide p clamped by bolts g between a pair of frames. The frame is of wood, bevelled at c, and provided with metal strips b, d placed edgeways so as to grip the hide. Cross-pieces e back up the grooved boards or corrugated metal plates f which retain the hides laterally. The metal strip or gripping-piece d is shaped to fit the tail end of the hide, and is carried by a bevelled board c<2>, adjustable by means of slots n and bolts m on the side piece c<1> of the frame. The bevelled portions c, c<2> of the frame are grooved or corrugated. Stretched canvas may be substituted for the boards f. The tanning-liquor is supplied from a cistern through the inlet k, and a pipe k' provided with a valve serves as an outlet for air. The frames, which may be adapted to turn in bearings, are preferably immersed in tan liquor during the tanning process, but the internal pressure is always maintained in excess of the external pressure.
