Abstract

8872. Davis, G. E., and Davis, A. R. April 27. Fatty oils, extracting. Relates to a process and apparatus for the extraction of oil from seeds &c. by means of solvents. A series of receptacles such as that shown in Fig. 1 are employed. The steam-jacketed receptacle 1 has a false bottom Z, a charging-door A, and an outlet for meal at the bottom, and is connected to the pipes N, R, 0, T, U, V, S, which are provided with cocks. The bottom of each receptacle 1 is connected with the top of the next by the pipe Q : the last receptacle of the series is similarly connected with the first. The process is as follows :-The receptacles 1 are charged with seed meal, and solvent is admitted to the first and passes through the pipes Q to the other receptacles. When the oil has been removed from the meal in the first receptacle, it is cut out of the series and the solvent is admitted at once to the second receptacle. The solution in the receptacle 1 is drained off through the pipe U, and a current of hot air is passed through the meal to vaporize the remaining solvent and carry it off to be condensed in a suitable cooler. After this treatment, the air valves are closed. Steam is turned off from the jacket space, and the meal is discharged. The air employed moves in a closed circuit, so that it may be used over and over again. Apparatus of usual construction is employed for heating, cooling, and propelling the air, and also for removing the solvent vapour.
