Abstract
8674. Lake, H. H., [Hutchinson, W. F., and Criswell, W. T.]. April 25. Vapour burners for branding by heat, specially applicable for branding cattle. An oil reservoir 10 has projecting tubes 12, 13, preferably covered by a wood &c. handle 14. The tube 13 does not communicate with the inside of the reservoir. The upper tube serves as the barrel of an air pump, the piston 16 of which is operated by the rod 17, 18. The air passes through the valve 19 and tube 20 into the upper part of the reservoir 10. A needle valve 21, 22 is provided to close the end of the tube 20 when the air is pumped into the reservoir to the desired pressure. A tube 23 passes from the reservoir 10, through the tube 13, to a hollow head 24, having small exits 25 through which the oil is sprayed. The exits 25 are controlled by needle valves 26, 27. The branding-iron 31, 32 is attached to a rim 30 carried by rods 29 extending from the flange 28. A perforated guard 33 surrounds the flame. A vapour burner is described in which the oil is heated by passing through a pipe surrounded by the flame. Air mixes with the vapour as it passes through the burner tubes. Any suitable form of vapour burner may be used.
