Abstract

7546. Hartley, J. W. April 11. Golf, clubs for. The heads of wooden or iron golf clubs are connected to the shafts by elastic bands, tape, &c. The clubs are sometimes fitted with crutches or guard pieces to prevent the ground from being torn up. As shown in Fig. 1, the wooden head H is provided with a stem which fits against a plain or stepped incline C D on the shaft, and is connected thereto by a pivot F. The parts are held together by elastic collars R or wrappings T of elastic material so as to yield slightly when the ball is struck. The pivot may consist of a pin passing completely through one or both of the parts, or of a ball, or may be dispensed with. The abutting faces may be strengthened with metal &c. plates A. Iron clubs are similarly constructed. To allow adjustment of the angle of the head, an arm H<3>, Fig. 18, on the head is fitted with a pawl P<3> to engage teeth on a socket S' fixed to the shaft S, or the pawl may be mounted on the socket and engage teeth on the arm. A set-screw such as C' may also be used for the same purpose. Elastic bands R' keep the parts in position. The head may be pivoted in a fork or to an arm carried by the socket. Fig. 23 shows a club fitted with a crutch W<2> to prevent injury to the ground. The crutch is detachably pivoted to a clip Z' on the shaft S, and carries a forked spring clip Z<2> which engages the stem S<2> of the head. If the club strikes the ground, the stem S' escapes from the clip Z<2>.
