ALLSTON SARGENT, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
GOLF-CLUB ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1919.
Application filed February 4, 1919. Serial No. 274,861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLSTON SARGENT, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at East Orange, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Golf-Club Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to an improved device for indoor golf practice and is particularly intended to be used in connection with an imitation or substitute golf ball or target, such as shown in my Patent 1,293,941.
In the construction of my former application the head of the club is provided with a point adapted to mark the ball at the center of the point of impact. The main object of my present invention is to provide a point which may be readily attached to any form of head and adjusted to the proper position on the head so as to slmulate accurately the proper use of the club. Another object is to avoid disturbing the proper balance of the club.
In the preferred form of the invention the attachment is formed of wire with a clamp adapted to be attached to a part of the handle and the point adapted to be adjusted opposite the proper part of the head.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the parts of the attachment in one form.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment as applied to an iron club and showing also a practice, substitute or imitation ball or target.
Fig. 3 shows a form of attachment as ap plied to a wooden club.
The member 5 which will be termed the point, is intended to project at substantlally right angles to the face of the head of the club 6 at the proper center of impact. The yoke portion 7, is preferably springy so as to grip the neck or handle of the club 8. The connecting member 9 1s adapted to be readily bent so as to facilitate ad ustment of the point to the proper position relative to the face of the head. To more securely fasten the attachment to the club I may providea screw 10 and thumb-nut 11 adapted to pass Copies of this patent may be obtained for through the loops or eyes 12 and 13 as shown. The ball 14 is preferably of some yielding material adapted to be marked or pierced at the point where it strikes.
It will be noted from the foregoing that the weight of the attachment may be very light and that it is borne by the handle instead of by the head. As aresultthe balance of the club is affected but very slightly, if at all. It will also be noted that this form of attachment may be applied to any type of club and removed at will without the use of .tools and without injuring or altering the point is indicated at 5, the clamp at 7 and the connecting member at 9.. Where the connecting member is of any great length it may be convenient at times to use a rubber ring or band 15 to secure the intermediate portion, as shown.
By the use of this invention it is possible to practice indoors with any club and accurately register the accuracy or inaccuracy of each stroke.
I claim:
1. A golf club attachment comprising, a point, a clamp and an adjustable connecting arm.
2. A golf club attachment comprising, a point, a yielding clamp and a connecting arm.
3. A golf club attachment comprising, a point and adjustable clamping means for detachably securing it in position on the exterior of the striking face of the club.
4. A golf club attachment comprising, a point adapted to reject from the face of the head of the club and means for securing the point to the handle of the club.
5. A golf club attachment comprising, a point, a yoke, a connecting member and a screw an nut co-acting with said yoke.
6. A golf club attachment formed of wire and comprising a point, a yoke and a connecting member.
