Abstract

5501. Leibert, O. F. March 14. Metal plates.-Relates to the production of hard-faced steel plates for use as armour, in the construction of burglar-proof safes and for other purposes. The soft backing-plate is cleaned by pouring over it, first molten cast or pig iron, and subsequently the molten steel to be used as the facing. When the surface is clean, the hard metal is poured on it to the required depth and allowed to cool. Or the hard metal plate may be similarly treated, and the soft backing applied as described above. Fig. 1 shows a plan, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation, of a suitable plant for the manufacture of such plates. The plate to be treated is heated in a furnace 3, and is then placed on a tilting platform 12, Fig. 4, contained in a chamber 11. Cast iron is melted in the furnace 5, and by means of a ladle 9 is conveyed to a perforated trough 31. From this trough the molten metal falls on to the plate 20, which is tilted so that the molten metal runs back through a channel 27 to the furnace. After sufficient treatment with cast iron, the plate has molten steel from a furnace 6 poured over it, the plate now being tilted in the opposite direction so that the steel runs back to the furnace. When the plate is ready, it is levelled and hard steel poured on it to the required depth. The platform 12 is made in sections, so that it can readily be altered to suit large or small plates. The ladles 9 conveying the molten metals are raised by a travelling crane 53. The delivery trcugh 31 is made L-shape as shown in Fig. 5, and is mounted to run on rails over the plate. Cams 40 on the wheels give it transverse movement against springs 42. The plate may be cast direct into the operating-chamber 11, and treated before cooling.
