2220. Gothan, H. Jan. 31. Compasses, magnetic.-Relates to apparatus for .determining the orientation of strata in bore-holes. A freely-oscillating magnetic needle l and a clockwork mechanism is mounted in a non-magnetic core barrel a. The clockwork is provided with a setting-hand r so that, at a predetermined time, the needle is locked by the liberation of a spring n and the clock is stopped. The barrel containing the extracted core and the locked needle is then set in a socket on a revolving plate v. With the aid of plumb lines w and suitable marks on the barrel and core, the latter can be set so that the direction indicated by the locked needle is north and south.
