Abstract

1584. Doremus, V. E., Wall, P. T., and Siebrecht, H. A. Jan. 23. Driving-mechanism; brakes ; clutches.-Relates to back-pedalling brakes and to free-wheel driving- mechanism for bicycles &c. In the form shown, clutch mechanism is fitted to the crank axle. The crank axle 1 carries at each end a collar 21 forming the inner part of a roller clutch and a disc 5 formed with a flange 7 and having rings 9 attached to form the outer part of a race for balls 16. The chain-wheel A is connected to a casing 12 with inwardly-projecting flanges which form the inner part of the ball-bearing race and the outer part of the clutch. A similar casing 12 on the opposite end of the axle is connected to the brake. The clutches are similar in construction, but act in opposite directions; they consist of rollers 23 forced outwards by springs so as to bear on a series of inclined recesses 17, Fig. 1, in the flanges of the casing 12. Double the number of recesses may be used to ensure quick action. The brake lever 36 is pivoted on an arm 38 carried by a bridge-piece clamped on the frame or mounted on a suitable bracket fixed to one of the rear stays. The lever is connected to a projection 32 on the casing 12 by a link 33. The brake shoe may be fitted with rollers c. The crank may be fixed by a screw 29, Fig. 2, to the casing 12, if it is desired to render the driving-clutch inoperative. The driving and brake clutches may be arranged on the same side of the machine, or the driving-clutch may be fitted to the rear wheel.
