Abstract

1337. Compagnie GÚnÚrale pour la Conservation des Liquides. Oct. 24, A.D. 1898, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Milk cans.-Relates to apparatus for filling portable receptacles with sterilized milk, and to means for permitting the withdrawal of small quantities of milk from the receptacles. Each receptacle or can a is fitted with a hermeticallyclosing lid having a three-way cock a<6> and also with a double bottom, in which is arranged a bent pipe filled with cotton-wool to form an air filter. The pipe is provided with a three-way cock, by means of which the interior of the can may be placed in communication with the air filter or with the atmosphere direct. The cans a are mounted on a trolley b running on rails c. The cocks a<6> of each can are connected by flexible pipes g to two pipes e and f, for supplying milk from the sterilizer, which is of ordinary construction, and for supplying steam respectively. The pipes e and f are fitted with suitable cocks. The vessels a are first sterilized by means of steam, and all the air is expelled from them. The can is then connected to the milk pipe and at the same time cold water from a perforated pipe h<1> is allowed to trickle over the can a to condense the steam, thus forming a vacuum in the can a into which the milk rises. The water which trickles over the cans is collected in a tray i placed beneath the rails c. The cans when filled are disconnected from the pipes g, and can be taken where required. The cans are emptied through the cocks a<6>, after first placing the interior in communication with the air filter by means of the three-way cock.
