24,931. Blount, F. R. Nov. 25. Vapour burners. - Relates to apparatus for vaporizing and burning liquid hydrocarbons for heating, cooking, or incandescent illuminating purposes. In the form shown in Figs. 9 and 11, an annular wick a surrounds a central a i r - supply pipe a<2>, and is adjustable in height by means of a bent rod and set-screw a'. The casing c being raised, the wick is ignited through one of the openings b<6>. The casing is now lowered, and the supply of air to the flame through the openings b<4>, b<2> diminished u n t i l combustion is rendered incomplete, the flame burning only on the outside of the wick and vapour being generated at its inner edge. Two concentric annular wicks may be used, the flame of the outer wick vaporizing the hydrocarbon drawn up by the other. The vapour p a s s e s through the perforated pipe c<6> into the chamber c<5>, where it mixes with air entering at the adjustable openings c<2>; a further mixture with heated air ascending the pipe a' takes place in the mixing-tube d before the vapour arrives at the burner e, above which an incandescent mantle may be suspended. The outer casing D is separated from the mixing-tube d by an air chamber, and is provided with a handle formed of spirally-wound wire D<1>, Fig. 2. In the modification shown in Fig. 12, a closed casing 6, having adjustable air inlets 7<a>, surrounds the lamp A. To damp the vaporizing-flame, a perforated cap 5, Fig. 14, is fixed upon the wick-tube 2. The vapour produced by the incomplete combustion ascends the tube 11 to the burner head 10<a>. Several varieties of the perforated cap 5 are shown in the drawings.
