Abstract

23,184. Whiteley & Sons, W., and Whiteley, W. Nov. 4. Cornpound processes. - Fabrics are stretched laterally, and " crabbed " or pulled taut longitudinally and transversely while being wound on a roller, and also steamed, by apparatus such as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The tentering- chains f have teeth f<3> to engage with the fabric, which is pressed on the teeth by a brush m. The races or boxes in which the chains run are moved transversely, to stretch the fabric, by means of screw shafts h, g. The fabric is wound, at the far end of the machine, on a roller O, which is slightly in advance of the chain shaft U, so that the fabric is kept stretched transversely by the chains while being wound on the roller. The roller O rests on plates or flanged discs S, S and on an intermediate roller S'. It is supported at the ends on counterweighted vertical slides P<2>, and is provided at one end with a disc P<1> which is rotated by friction-wheels t, t<1>. The fabric may be steamed or drawn through hot water, during the foregoing operation, or it may be afterwards boiled &c., the roller 0 being perforated for the purpose.
