Abstract

22,035. Hoffmann, A. von. Oct. 19. Diving.-Relates to apparatus for submarine mining, or for working on sunken vessels or submerged bodies. A submarine vessel a is provided with an air-lock g, at the side or bottom, to facilitate the changing of tools which are attached to tubular rods n passing through ball-and-socket joints l carried by the inner door h. An outer sliding door i of the air-lock is actuated by racks, pinions, and bevel gearing, and is secured, when closed, by a screw 1. The inner door h, Fig. 1, is hinged at the bottom, and fastened, when closed, by a screw at the top. When both doors are closed, water is run off from the air-lock to a receptacle k through a pipe j fitted with a stop-cock, and the inner door can afterwards be opened. Struts 4 for steadying the vessel are moved into contact with the bed of the sea by crank handles, pinions, and racks, or the like. The tubes n slide through the balls l of the joints, and are operated by cogwheels and friction-rollers. Core rods are arranged to turn and slide within the tubes n to operate tools, such as screw-wrenches, drills, boring-tools, saws, hammers, spiral cutters, hooks, scoops, &c.
