Abstract

18,817. Grote, L. Sept. 2. Blowing and moulding bottles.-Relates to machinery for the manufacture of glass bottles. A two-part neck mould f and a two-part measuring- mould h are mounted on a vertical turntable c. The exterior of the neck mould is formed with grooves or mouldings, about which the counterparts in the measuring-mould and body mould fit closely. The neck and measuring moulds are first inverted, and the cavity they present is filled up with molten glass. They are then turned back into the position shown in Fig. 3, and, the measuring-mould being opened, a mass u of glass is left depending from the neck mould as shown in Fig. 9. The plunger M descends a short distance into the glass, and on its withdrawal air is admitted in graduated quantity by means of the cock Q<1>, the air-admission cock and valves being shown in section to a larger scale in Figs. 10 and 12. The plunger M is rounded at M<3>, and moves in a tapered bore i. Air is cut off when the shoulder M' descends below the end of the passage P. The valve plug Q is of the ordinary tapered form, but is provided with graduated grooves or depressions Q<x>, which enable the admission of air to be accurately controlled, the valve being shown nearly closed in Fig. 12. During the preliminary blowing operation in the open air, the bottom end of the mass is worked with a shaping-spoon w. Fig. 6. The partly-formed bottle is then enclosed in one of the body moulds z and is blown to shape, after which the body and neck moulds are opened and the finished bottle removed. Reference is made to Specification No. 14,539, A.D. 1898, in which the same apparatus is described, but the details and combinations claimed are different.
