Abstract

18,346. Newton, H. C., and Ives, F. E. Aug. 26. Magic-lanterns.-The lantern is provided with a transversely adjustable front, so that it may be used as an ordinary, a microscope, or a spectrum lantern, and, on removing the front and its supporting - block, kinematograph apparatus may be fixed in position. The block G has a rib G<1> engaging guide-bars E', E<2>, the latter undercut, on the base B, and pins E* on the bar E hold it firmly in place. By means of similar guide-bars H<1>, H<2> and a rib J, the front K may be moved across the block so as to bring the microscope objective X, the ordinary objective Y, or the spectrum objective Z before the condenser C, the extreme positions being determined by stops J<2>, J<2> on the front coming in contact with a bar J<1> on the block G, and the intermediate position by a spring catch J<3> entering a hole G<2>. A screen M behind the spectrum objective Z is provided with a slit for the passage of the light and a hole covered with a reflecting-prism N which, with the help of a mirror L, directs a portion of the light through the objective Y upon a corner of the screen for comparison. When not required, the mirror may be turned out of the way. The condenser C is made so that part of it may be removed when required, the springs C' being turned back on pivots. The back of the lantern is fitted with a pivoted curtain - holding frame and a pivoted cover, the positions of the hinges being such as to facilitate folding up for the purpose of packing.
