Abstract
17,527. Lake, H. H., [Stecher, G.]. Aug. 13. Driving-mechanism, hand, for bicycles &c. Consists of auxiliary hand driving-mechanism actuated by the handle-bar. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the handle b carries arms c which are pivoted to cranks a, the shaft of which is mounted in bearings d in the head, and is connected to the front wheel axle by chain gearing r<1>, r<2> and r<3>, r<4>. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which a single arm c on the handle-bar actuates a cranked shaft a, the chain gearing being arranged as in Fig. 2. The chain-wheel r<4> may be fitted with ratchet gearing to allow the pedal driving-mechanism alone to be used. Locking-mechanism may be used for fixing the handle-bar to the frame when required.
