Abstract
16,471. La Croix, A. J. de. July 28. Thermometers.-The apparatus is for indicating at a distance rises of temperature in grain &c. subject to spontaneous heating. An inverted bottle-shaped vessel A, buried in the grain, has a lead tube f passing from it to a cup B over which a dome-shaped vessel C with pipe D is fixed, the lower end projecting into mercury in the cup. A glass tube (not shown) is fitted over the tube D and contains a scale. To prevent leakage, the joints are made with rubber packing tightened on flanges by screws and sealed with glycerine. For this purpose, and for the introduction of air under slight pressure, another tube leads into the cup, and the air and then the glycerine are forced in by a hand-pump.
