Abstract

15,884. Blake, F. C. July 20. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. Gasoline, benzoline, and like petroleum spirit is vaporized in the apparatus, which is particularly applicable to launch and motor-car engines. The oil enters by an opening a<1>, and the air, which may be warmed, by surrounding orifices a<11>. The oil is directed by the valve J<1> through the shallow chamber B and over a pad of absorbent material m secured between layers of gauze, which pad becomes saturated with oil. The air and oil vapour pass around and under the pad between ribs r on the base of the chamber B, and then down through the casing A, being directed in a spiral course by a helix of closely-packed asbestos G. They next pass upwards inside the casing E through holes d in the tube D, and thence downwards to the pipe o leading to the combustion chamber. The valve J<1> is held open by a spring j, and is closed by a rod M which also controls the valve H containing a port h for the escape of the mixture, and a port h<1> for a supplementary supply of air through the port o'. The spring may be omitted, and the rod M worked by a screw, and the valve H may be a rotary one. The mixture may be controlled by a throttle valve, and the supplementary air by a gridiron valve in the pipe o.
