Kilns.-Relates to continuous kilns for drying and burning bricks, tiles, sanitary ware, and other clay goods, and for salt glazing, and, more particularly, to kilns composed of a number of chambers arranged in a row, and provided with means whereby the heated gases from any one chamber can be conveyed through any other one or more to effect preliminary drying &c., while any chamber can be cut out or connected directly to the main flue if desired. Fig. 1 shows a horizontal section on different planes through some of the chambers, and Figs. 2 and 3 show vertical sections on the lines Y Y and Z Z, Fig. 1, respectively. In the floor of the kiln are the open-topped flue D, with stops d<1>, d', and a set of branch flues e<1>, e<2>, e<3>, m<1>, m<2> for each chamber. The branch flues e<1>, e<1>, e<3> open into the main flue F, and the first two also communicate by a vertical passage with a flue I running along the top of the kiln. A similar flue 0 along the other side at the top communicates by other vertical passages with the branch flues m<1>, m<2>. Suitable dampers are provided to enable the direction of the heated gas to be changed as desired. The fireplaces are shown at b, and the charging and discharging apertures at c. The kiln can be arranged to work with an updraught for drying goods, but not for burning.
