Music note indicators; teaching music.-Consists of means for exhibiting the signature of any key, the succession of notes in such key, and the names of such notes or their positions on any instrument. Fig. 2 shows the application taken in connection with a violin. A slide i on which is part of a stave with flats on it, can be exposed so as to show any number of them in their proper position, the others being covered up by a slide h. The slide h is marked with a continuation of the former stave, and is perforated by holes m arranged diagonally. On another part of the slide h is a representation of the fingerboard of a violin, and on the slide i are letters which are so placed that, when the slide i is moved so as to show, say, four flats, the names of the notes composing such key appear in their proper positions on the representations of the strings. Sharps are shown in like manner on the other side of the slide i, which must therefore be reversed when they are to be exhibited instead of flats. The name of the key also appears, and through the diagonally-arranged openings numbers indicating the corresponding fingering are shown. Dotted lines connect the representations of the strings with their names on the diagonal line, and thus show the open notes of such strings. The principle may be extended to showing chords, notes, &c. on keyboard instruments.
