Abstract

9482. Guyenot, P. L. April 25. Lighting and extinguishing gas.-Relates to an electric device for turning on, lighting, and extinguishing gas burners, of the kind described in Specification No. 29,244, A.D. 1897. Figs. 1 and 3 are sectional elevations of the burner on planes at right-angles to one another. The service pipe B opens into a chamber A from which-tubes a<1> and f lead to the burner and pilot-light respectively. The end e<1> of an electromagnet lies between the ends d, d<1> of a horizontal permanent magnet. The battery, switch, electromagnet, and a lighter or platinum wire in the pilot-light Y are connected by wires, and when the electromagnet is excited the ball b is lifted from its seat by the joint attraction of the electromagnet and of one pole d<1> of the permanent magnet. Gas then passes up both the burner and pilot-light, and is ignited by the latter. On breaking the circuit, the ball drops into the seat c<1> and cuts off the supply of gas to the pilot-light. To extinguish the flame, the current is passed in the reverse direction, the ball b being lifted up to the end d of the permanent magnet and then dropping into the seat c, thus cutting off the gas supply. The switch consists of two springs l, l<1>, operated by a rotatable. stud l<2>, which brings one or other of the springs into contact with the studs n<1>, n<2> and sends the current in either the forward or the reverse direction.
