Abstract

9464. Naef, P. Sept. 25, A.D. 1897, [date claimed under Sec. 103 of Paterets &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Calcining-kilns; gas-producers. -Relates to a process for calcining limestone and similar substances, for example, limestone for use in smelting- furnaces, and for recovering bye-products, such as cyanides and ammonia, if desired. The fuel is charged by a conveyer 13 to the top of a coking-apparatus 2. Incandescent gases from the blast furnace 1 enter from the tube 7 through a water-cooled damper 8 to an annular channel, from which they enter the apparatus. Steam is passed through openings 17<a>, 17<b> to convert the cyanide into ammonia, which escapes with the heating-gas and tar through the outlet 15. The coke formed is discharged through doors 12 to a storage hopper 16, from which it is carried by a conveyer 17 to the hopper 18. The material to be calcined, such as limestone or cement, is fed from a hopper 21 by a conveyer 22 to the calcining- kiln 3. This kiln receives incandescent gases from the blast furnace 1 by a tube 7, water-cooled damper 9, annular channel 23, and ducts 24. Steam may be introduced below these ducts to convert the cyanide into ammonia. The gases escape through a pipe 15<a>, while the lime &c. falls to the bottom, and passes through doors 24<a> to a hopper 25, from which it is carried by a conveyer 26 to the hopper 18.
