Abstract
8439. Stott, J. April 9. Acetylene.-The carbide is placed in trays I mounted, together with distance-pieces J, upon a rod H. Such a set of trays is placed in each of two or more generators A which are intended for successive use and are fitted with gas-tight covers B and waste cocks E. Water is supplied from a tank Q, fitted with a ball cock R and a filter P, to a pipe L, branches F from which, provided with cocks G, conduct the water to the bottom of the generators. A non-return valve N in the pipe L closes when the gas pressure exceeds the head of water in the pipe, and thereby cuts off the supply of water and prevents escape of gas. The gas passes from the generators by a pipe S to a condenser U, V, and thence by the pipe W into the top of the holder X, and the water in the latter is driven up the pipe X' into the upper chamber Y, to a greater or less extent according to the production and consumption of the gas. Y' is a safety escape pipe. The gas outlet a is fitted with a governor b.
