Making railway and like buffer casings.-A solid bar of steel or iron has a flange jumped on its end and is then bored out as shown at c, Fig. 1, by suitable tools, such as those marked a and b. Longitudinal slots d, Fig. 2, are then cut in the sides, and the casing is placed in the die e, Fig. 4, which consists of three blocks pressed together by springs g. After the casing c has been placed in the die e a mandrel is forced in, so as to expand the flanged end of the buffer casing into the form shown in end view in Fig. 3, and in dotted lines in the lower part of Fig. 2.
