2424. Metcalfe, J. Jan. 29. Filters; heating. -Consists o f a filtering and heating apparatus more especially intended for treating boiler feedwater. The filter consists of an outer casing a, Fig. 1, containing an inner casing c, perforated near its ends and filled with filtering-material such as coke. The annular space between the two is divided into two parts by the flanges c<3>, a<4>, which form a tight joint under the pressure of a screw such as d. In a modification, Fig. 5, the filter is placed horizontally, and the flanges c<3>, a<4> are pressed together by a bell-crank lever c<4> operated by the screw d. The screw d may be as shown in Fig. 1, or may have a stuffing-box; or, as shown in Fig. 8, may screw into a plug sliding in the hollow boss a<7> on the lid, leakage being prevented by a collar on the screw having above it an elastic washer. The lid a<3>, instead of being secured as in Fig. 1, may be fixed inside the casing, so that the pressure of the liquid and of the screw d help to keep it tight. The lid c<2> may be fixed to the casing c by means of a bayonet-joint, being prevented from turning when in position by a spring bolt, or by a pawl and ratchet teeth. In order to heat the water in the filter the casing a may be steam-jacketed, or the casing c may be surrounded by a steam coil. The water is forced through the filter by means of injectors-either live steam, exhaust, or combined exhaust and live steam. The steam from the filter jackets may be used by the injectors, or may be separately mixed with the water before it enters the filters.
