Captive balls.-Apparatus for practising golf strokes, in which the distance to which the ball would have travelled had it been free is indicated upon a dial, and the failure to hit the ball true, that is without either 'pulling ' or 'slicing' it, is made known audibly. The ball b is mounted on a screwed spindle b<6>, so that it may be elevated any desired amount above the casing a, which is let into the ground, so as to be flush with the surface. The lower end of the spindle forms a sphere b<1>, turning in suitable bearings c. When struck, the ball passes below the edges of the casing, carrying the thin rubber membrane a<5> with it, and its spindle forces the cradle cross-piece e<3> round against the action of the springs e<5> to an extent proportionate to the strength of the blow. The cradle has a projection e<6> which strikes against a pointer f travelling over a graduated dial f<1>. Should the ball be not hit straight ahead, an arm b<8>, carrying a striker, moves to one side or the other and strikes one of two differently-sounding bells d. These bells are elliptical, so as to he adjustable at varying distances away from the central line between them. The ball is retained in its normal position by a spring b<9>.
