Abstract

1219. Green, W. R. Jan. 15. Piston pumps; valves and valve gear.-Relates primarily to motive-power engines, but is also applicable to pumps. Fig. 8 shows the application of the invention to a vertical steam engine. A continuous rotary movement is given to the piston b at the same time that it reciprocates by means of a pinion e with helical or inclined teeth. This pinion is adapted to gear with spiral teeth on a disc f carried by the crank-pin, and as the crankpin revolves the disc drives the pinion and so rotates the piston-rod and piston. The movement is transmitted from the shaft c carrying the pinion to the piston-rod b<l> through a suitable universal joint, and the connecting-rod c', which may be bent to clear the pinion, as shown, is jointed to the piston-rod so as to reciprocate with it without rotating. Distribution of the motive fluid may be effected, as shown in Fig. 8, by a ported sleeve-like extension b<3> of the piston working over ports in the cylinder ; or, as shown in Fig. 3, by rotary valves h working over ports in the cylinder heads. These valves are rotated by the revolving piston through the medium of rods h<2>. In another form, distribution is effected by a ported liner which revolves without reciprocating. The liner engages with the piston by means of a sliding feather.
