Abstract

25,871. Lake, H. H., [Dreher, C.]. Nov. 6. Tanning.-Formaldehyde is employed in the tanning of hides and skins, and is used in diluted aqueous solution, being allowed to concentrate in the hide by drying the latter. The grain side is protected from injury by using means to prevent such concentration there. In the case of thin leather the formaldehyde is added direct to the ooze or tan-bath. Leather of medium thickness is partially tanned in the usual way and formaldehyde added to the finishing-liquors, while thick leather is completely tanned and then steeped in a solution of formaldehyde. To protect the grain side, it may be moistened with water while the skin is drying, or it may be rubbed with oil, fatty matter, glycerine, alkaline solutions, or finelydivided metallic oxides together with water, alcohol, glycerine, or grease. Glycerine may be allowed to remain on the leather, but if hygroscopic substances, such as calcium chloride, are employed, they must be carefully removed by washing after the leather has been dried and the action of the formaldehyde is complete. Leather so prepared is stated to resist the action of water even' when hot, the tannin being rendered completely insoluble.
