Abstract

23.883. Thomas, R. B., and Thomas, H. S. Oct. 16. C,leaning; pickling.-Iron or steel plates are pickled and swilled by passing them continuously, one by one, through an acid bath and then through a washing-bath by mechanical means. Or the plates may be pickled in bulk and swilled singly, or pickled singly and swilled in bulk. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement of apparatus. The plates are passed through the acid bath a by a series of wheels b fitted with hooks b' and mounted on a rotating shaft. They pass to the rollers c, which feed them to the swilling-trough f in which the rollers e are fitted. The baths are preferably heated by fires g, h or by steam pipes i, k, &c. In modified arrangements, the wheels b are replaced by endless bands fitted with fingers, or by a series of rollers, or by an oscillating cradle.
