Abstract

1393031 Plasma coating and then electroplating metal on to an article R J SPERL 6 June 1972 26224/72 Headings C7B and C7F An article (e.g. of Al, Mg alloy, Ti alloy or organic polymeric material) is coated by a method comprising the steps of depositing a plasmacoating of a first metal (e.g. stainless steel, Cu, Ni or Nichrome (Trade Mark)) on a surface of the article to provide a substantially non-porous coating of the metal thereon, reducing the thickness of the coating to not more than 0À007 inch when the deposited coating is more than 0À007 inch thick, and electro-plating a different metal (e.g. Cr on the plasma-coating). For example, an Al roll of the form used in the textile industry is solvent-cleaned, grit-blasted with sand or aluminium oxide, plasma-sprayed with stainless steel, (optionally ground), electro-plated with Cr, ground and polished. For the plasma-spraying, the roll is rotated in a jig and has passed therethrough a cooling fluid such as air, H 2 O, liquid CO 2 or liquid N 2 . The plasma is derived from Ar is at 15000 to 30000‹F and is supplied with powdered metal. The plasma gun may be hand-manipulated or be mechanically traversed back and forth along the roll axis as the roll rotates. For the electroplating, the ends of the roll are protected by lacquer or by capping with polymeric closures. The process may be used in the repair of damaged rolls. Specified organic polymeric materials which may be treated by the process to produce light weight articles such as rolls, plates-mandrels or sheets are polyamides, polyurethanes, poly(tetrafluoroethylene), polyacrylics and methacrylics, rubber and synthetic rubber. An article can be plasma-coated with two different metals before electro-plating.
