The arch A is built over the space above the inclined firebars B in such a way that, in combination with the smaller arch D, a space E is provided for the transmission to the furnace of air from the ashpit, which has been introduced by the flues 0. In a modification, the apertures from the ashpit flues open to the space immediately below the upper and the smaller arch, the air being deflected to the fire by suitable adjacent arches.
