21,015. Tanner, H. Sept. 13. Brakes for bicycles, tricycles, &c. Relates to brakes actuated by a lever pivoted on the handlebar The Figures show the application to a bicycle rear wheel. A hand-lever 2, Fig. 1 pivoted at 2<x>, lifts a rod 3 connecting it to a bell-crank lever 6, Fig. 3, pivoted at 7 to the frame. A rod 8 connects the lever 6 to a second lever 9, Fig. 12, carrying a cross-piece 51 connected by rods 50 to bell-crank levers 49, carrying brake shoes adapted to engage the wheel rim, and pivoted to arms adjustably secured to slots in plates 46 <x> clamped on the chain stays. A spring 23 releases the brake on the pressure being removed. In the case of a band brake a rod 33, Fig. 9, secured to the cross-piece 51 actuates a lever 34, thereby forcing a band 35 into engagement with a brake cylinder 36 secured to the driving-wheel. Similar mechanism may be used for applying tyre brakes.
