Abstract

20,052. Rhind, F. Aug. 31. Acetylene and like lamps.-Relates to portable lamps in which the water is fed to the calcium carbide or its equivalent by means of a wick, and describes means for opening the gas cock to the burner at the instant at which the water and the calcium carbide are brought into contact. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the rod 4 of the wick-carrier 12 has at its upper end a rack 41, which engages with a pinion 31 on the spindle 3 of the gas cock 61. Modifications are described in which cams or pawls are provided to prevent the wick and the carbide from being brought into contact except when the gas cock is open.
