Drying lumber &c.-The material is dried in one or more drying-rooms 1, 2, 3, &c. arranged at the sides of a central room B, at one end of which is arranged a heating-apparatus C, and from which hot air passes through adjustable openings d to the drying-rooms, which communicate with one another by adjustable openings f near which are placed partitions g adapted to conduct the air to the top of the chambers near which they extend. Beneath the chamber B is a condensing-chamber A to which air passes from the drying-chambers through adjustable openings e, the condensation of water being effected by water issuing from a sprinkler or by a surface condenser in the chamber A. The air is thence driven by a fan c to the heating-apparatus C. A screen i of corrugated iron is provided to cause the air, from the drying- rooms adjacent to the heating-apparatus, to flow to the condenser. Communicating-passages K@, and K10, are arranged at the ends of the apparatus, and the passages K1, K2, K3, K4, K6, K7, K8, and E, are almost entirely bounded by the drying-rooms, so that there is little loss of heat by radiation. The lumber is placed on horses and run into the drying-chamber through doors h.
