17,484. Sanders, J., and Hopcroft, E. D. July 26. Brakes are constructed to act on the sides of the tyre instead of upon the tread. Two levers A, A', pivoted at a', are provided with rollers B for acting on the sides of the tyre. The levers are operated by links connected to an adjustable brake rod C, C', which is raised by means of a brake lever formed of two parts D, E, connected by a crosspin carried by the clamp M. The brake is operated by depressing the end D of the brake lever by means of the thumb. The pivot a<2> is adjustably carried by a clamp k<1> fixed to the fork crown, and to it is attached a block or cone H of leather, hide, &c. When the brake is applied, the ends of the rollers come into frictional contact with the block H.
