Abstract

16,094. Lake, H. H., [Miller, E. A.]. July 6. Brakes chiefly designed for velocipedes and like vehicles and actuated by back-pedalling. Fig. 1 shows a form suitable for a bicycle. The chain-wheel C, which runs loose on the shaft A, is formed with a rim E the inner surface of which forms a shoulder to receive the brake spring G, which is secured at one end to a plate I fixed to the frame, while the other end is free and is provided with a series of ratchet teeth M. Lugs N or other suitable means may be employed to keep the spring in position. A ratchet-wheel 0 is formed on the hub of the chain-wheel, and upon the crank B is pivoted a pawl P having detents R for engagement with the teeth M and the ratchet-wheel 0 respectively. While driving the bicycle, the pawl engages with the wheel 0, but if back pressure be applied when cranks are about horizontal the pawl is released from engagement with 0 and falls into engagement with the teeth M of the brake spring, and the brake may then be applied to any required extent by back pressure on the pedals. The device may also be applied to other mechanisms.
