Signals, lamp.- Signs for advertising, signalling, and like purposes consist of electric lamps mounted on boards or frames, those on each board constituting a letter, figure, or pattern, which may be altered by lighting certain lamps to form other letters, figures, or patterns, and the letters &c. on the several boards forming together complete words &c. The characters are preferably represented on the boards in an inclined position. Several forms of switch devices are described for lighting the lamps. That shown in Fig. 3 consists of a key or lever B, which makes contact with springs C connected with lamps which when illuminated form a certain letter &c. Each board will have a device of this kind for each letter &c., the lamps which are common to the several letters &c. being coupled together. In Fig. 5 is shown another switch device in which the vertical sliding rods D forming a part of the circuit are lifted to the contacts C through levers G which engage with pins p on the rods, the levers being operated by keys B, of which there is one for each letter &c. A pawl u serves to hold down a particular key until another is worked. This arrangement may also be used for illuminating groups of lamps forming words, and in a modification of it the lever G may be operated through push-bars and crank levers. The lamps may be enclosed in a cylinder or lantern having a transparent front and provided with ventilating-openings. The Provisional Specification describes a revolving drum provided with pegs for operating the switch bars. Gas may be used in lieu of electric light. For day signs the letters may be formed by painting &c.
